Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the US and Israeli attacks, has been elected as the country’s next Supreme Leader. Iran’s powerful Assembly of Experts has approved Mojtaba’s name.
Following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s leadership appears to be coming to an end. Sources have told Iran International that the Assembly of Experts, under pressure from the Revolutionary Guards, has elected Ali Khamenei’s son Mojtaba as the next Supreme Leader.
After 36 years, the reins of power have changed.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has passed away at the age of 86. He led the country for 36 years, from 1989 to the present. His death occurred during a joint US-Israeli strike, first announced by US President Donald Trump on his social media platforms. The Iranian regime later officially confirmed his death. Following his death, questions arose about who would succeed him. According to Iran’s constitution, the new Supreme Leader is elected by the Assembly of Experts, a powerful religious body empowered to select and oversee the country’s supreme leader.
Sources claim that the Assembly has elected Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader. However, this decision was reportedly made under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC is considered Iran’s most powerful military and strategic institution, wielding profound influence over the country’s political and security structures. According to reports, pressure was exerted to reach a quick decision on the leadership issue due to the security situation and regional tensions.
Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered influential within the corridors of power, and his close ties to the security establishment have been widely discussed. However, he has never formally held a major constitutional position.
Khamenei’s funeral will be held in Mashhad
Media reports indicate that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be buried in his native city of Mashhad. His father’s grave is also located at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad. However, the date of the funeral has not yet been disclosed.
