In an effort to consolidate the crucial women’s vote–a demographic that has traditionally supported Mamata Banerjee–the Prime Minister made a major financial pledge

Kolkata/Berhampore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday pushed for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and fast-tracking the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) implementation to protect Bengalis and Hindu refugee communities, respectively, if the BJP is voted to power in the impending Assembly elections in West Bengal.

Modi’s stance on the UCC came a day after the BJP made it a promise in its poll manifesto for Bengal. His message on the CAA to the Matuas and other communities of Hindu migrants sounded like an assurance to placate them in a bid to retain their support after they were hit hard by the deletion of voters’ names under the special intensive revision (SIR) ahead of the elections.

The Prime Minister batted for the UCC roll-out while addressing a BJP poll campaign rally at Jangipur in Murshidabad to ensure that Bengalis do not become a “minority” in the state as a result of the ruling Trinamul Congress’ appeasement politics. He said: “National security is of paramount importance to us. The BJP has resolved to implement the UCC in West Bengal to end the politics of appeasement forever.”

“West Bengal will no longer tolerate this game of appeasement and vote-bank politics. We will not allow Bengalis to become a minority in the state,” Modi added.

On the CAA, Modi earlier said at Katwa in Burdwan East, “I have come here to give a guarantee to all the refugee families, including the Matuas and Namashudras, living here. You are not living here at the Trinamul Congress leaders’ mercy. You are protected by the Constitution of India.”

The Prime Minister explained: “The Modi government enacted the CAA so that you get your citizenship rights. As soon as the BJP forms a government in Bengal, the work of granting citizenships under the CAA will be expedited.”

The Prime Minister accused the TMC of spreading fake narratives to mislead people in his veiled reference to the leak of two such videos which showed Aam Janata Unnyan Party founder Humayun Kabir demanding `1,000 crore from the BJP to split the Muslim votes.

Modi alleged: “As the election dates are nearing, the TMC is sensing its defeat. It has started creating false propaganda by circulating fake and artificial intelligence-generated videos. The TMC did the same in Assam as well. I am cautioning you; do not get misled by such fake videos. Go out and vote in large numbers to help the BJP win here in Bengal.”

Reiterating his allegations that the infiltrators are causing a demographic change in the rural areas of Bengal with the blessings of the TMC, Modi once again vowed to evict them when the BJP forms a government in the state. He asked the infiltrators to pack their bags of belongings and be ready to face the crackdown.

On the recent Ram Navami violence in the district, Mr Modi pointed out that while the festival was celebrated peacefully across the country, it witnessed attacks and clashes under the protection of the TMC.

Modi later held a third rally in South Dinajpur, where he tore into the TMC “misrule” in the state by pushing corruption and deprivation in the state.
