Raipur to Get Additional Homing Facility for 250 Electric Locomotives; CM Credits Double-Engine Government for Accelerated Railway Development
Raipur: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has on Friday July 10, 2026 hailed the Union Government’s approval of a ₹175-crore project to create additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at Raipur as a landmark achievement for Chhattisgarh’s railway infrastructure. In a post on X, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the project, describing it as another milestone under the “double-engine government.”
“The railway infrastructure in Chhattisgarh is being strengthened at an unprecedented pace under the leadership of the double-engine government. This project marks a significant step towards building a modern and efficient rail network in the state,” Sai said.
The project, approved by the Ministry of Railways, will establish additional homing facilities at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Loco Shed under the South East Central Railway (SECR) in Raipur. The initiative aims to optimize existing railway assets, expand locomotive capacity, and enhance maintenance infrastructure in line with the rapid growth of Indian Railways’ electric locomotive fleet.
A Strategic Investment in Rail Infrastructure
According to the Railway Ministry, the concept of “homing” refers to assigning locomotives to a designated loco shed that functions as their primary maintenance base. These facilities are responsible for scheduled servicing, safety inspections, repairs, and overall upkeep to ensure safe and efficient train operations.
With freight movement and passenger traffic steadily increasing across the country, Indian Railways has been expanding its maintenance infrastructure to support a growing fleet of electric locomotives. The newly approved project in Raipur is expected to significantly enhance maintenance capacity while providing space for future technological upgrades.
Boost for Freight, Passenger Services and Industry
Chief Minister Sai said the project would substantially improve the maintenance capabilities of electric locomotives in Raipur, resulting in more efficient freight and passenger transportation.
He noted that stronger railway infrastructure would not only improve operational efficiency but also prepare the state’s rail network for future expansion.
“Modern railway infrastructure is essential for economic growth. This project will strengthen logistics, support industrial development, and improve connectivity across Chhattisgarh,” the Chief Minister stated.
Towards a National Logistics Hub
The state government believes the project will further reinforce Chhattisgarh’s position as one of India’s emerging industrial and logistics hubs.
With its rich mineral resources, expanding manufacturing base, and strategic location in central India, Chhattisgarh has increasingly become a vital corridor for freight movement. Enhanced locomotive maintenance facilities are expected to reduce operational delays, improve fleet availability, and strengthen supply chains serving industries such as steel, coal, cement, and power.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the railway investment would contribute significantly to the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047” while accelerating the state’s own roadmap for “Viksit Chhattisgarh.”
Railway Ministry Highlights Infrastructure Expansion
The Ministry of Railways said the ₹175-crore investment forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to modernize locomotive maintenance infrastructure in response to the rapid expansion of electric rail operations across the country.
The additional homing facilities will maximize the utilization of the existing Raipur depot while creating capacity for future technological advancements and fleet expansion.
Railway officials believe the project will improve reliability, safety, and operational efficiency, enabling Indian Railways to meet rising transportation demands with greater effectiveness.
