Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai launches an innovative mobile Tree ATM, offering free saplings and promoting long-term environmental stewardship across Jashpur.

In an era where Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are synonymous with cash withdrawals, Chhattisgarh has introduced an ATM that dispenses something far more valuable—life itself. The ‘Tree ATM’, launched by Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai in Jashpur, represents a refreshing blend of environmental responsibility, innovation, and public participation.

The initiative, pioneered by the Jashpur Forest Department, transforms the simple act of collecting a sapling into an engaging public experience. Citizens can now receive free saplings through a mobile Tree ATM that will travel across the district, making quality plant species easily accessible while spreading awareness about ecological conservation.

Far from being a symbolic campaign, the initiative addresses one of the most pressing global concerns—climate change and environmental degradation—through grassroots action.

A Sapling Today, A Forest Tomorrow

Flagging off the Tree ATM from Bagia Helipad, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai personally collected an Amla sapling and distributed plants among citizens, reinforcing the government’s message that environmental protection begins with individual responsibility.

He observed that the ongoing monsoon season provides the ideal opportunity for plantation drives and stressed that every sapling planted today has the potential to secure a healthier environment for future generations.

His message was simple yet profound: environmental conservation cannot remain solely the responsibility of governments; it requires active participation from every citizen.

Beyond Distribution: Ensuring Survival

One of the most significant aspects of the Tree ATM initiative is that it goes beyond merely distributing saplings.

Every recipient will receive practical guidance on:

  • Scientific plantation techniques
  • Proper watering and maintenance
  • Protection from grazing and damage
  • Long-term care until the sapling matures into a tree

This approach addresses a common weakness in plantation drives, where thousands of saplings are planted but only a fraction survive due to inadequate care.

By focusing equally on plantation and preservation, the initiative aims to improve the survival rate of newly planted trees and create lasting ecological impact.

Inspired by ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’

The Tree ATM also complements Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, which encourages citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers.

Building upon this national movement, Chhattisgarh has added an innovative delivery mechanism that makes participation easier, more accessible, and more engaging for the public.

The campaign’s slogan—

“Today’s Sapling, Tomorrow’s Shade”

captures a timeless truth: the benefits of environmental conservation are often enjoyed by future generations rather than the one planting the tree.

Technology Meets Ecology

Innovation is often associated with digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation. The Tree ATM demonstrates that innovation can also serve environmental causes.

Instead of creating another awareness campaign through speeches and posters, the Forest Department has introduced a visible, interactive model that encourages curiosity and participation. The concept simplifies access to saplings while creating a memorable experience for people of all ages.

Such ideas have the potential to inspire replication across districts and even other states.

Our Perspective

The success of environmental campaigns depends not on the number of saplings distributed but on the number of trees that survive.

The Tree ATM represents a shift from ceremonial plantation drives to sustained environmental stewardship. By combining accessibility, education, and public involvement, Chhattisgarh has introduced a model that could redefine community-led afforestation.

If replicated effectively, this initiative may prove that the most valuable ATM in the future will not dispense currency—but clean air, biodiversity, and hope.
