Olympic Medallist Smashes Commonwealth and Games Records to Clinch Third Straight CWG Gold
Glasgow:India opened its gold medal account at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in spectacular fashion as Mirabai Chanu produced a record-breaking performance to win the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, securing her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal.
The 31-year-old weightlifting icon from Manipur reaffirmed her status as one of India’s greatest sporting champions by lifting a combined 190kg, comprising 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. Her remarkable effort not only earned her the gold medal but also established new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records.
Mirabai’s 85kg snatch set a new Commonwealth and Games record, while her 105kg clean and jerk also became a new Commonwealth Games record. Her total lift of 190kg further rewrote the Games record books.
Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 168kg, finishing 22kg behind the Indian champion.
The competition, however, did not begin smoothly for Mirabai. She failed to register her opening snatch attempt at 82kg, briefly raising concerns. Displaying the composure and resilience that have defined her career, she successfully completed her next attempt before setting the record with an 85kg lift.
A similar challenge emerged in the clean and jerk when she failed her opening attempt at 105kg. Undeterred, Mirabai returned confidently to lift the same weight on her second attempt, securing both the gold medal and another Games record. With victory already assured, she chose to skip her final attempt, conserving energy ahead of the Asian Games, which are scheduled in less than two months.
Mirabai’s latest triumph adds another glorious chapter to her illustrious career and provides India with a dream start to its Commonwealth Games campaign. Her consistency on the international stage continues to inspire a new generation of Indian athletes and reinforces the country’s growing strength in weightlifting.
