Raipur: Pragati College, Raipur, celebrated Hindi Fortnight with an interactive programme that brought students, faculty members and academic experts together to reflect on Hindi not merely as a subject of study, but as a living language of everyday communication.
The programme was jointly organised by the Department of Education and the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication of Pragati College, with an emphasis on encouraging students to understand, use and respect Hindi as a language capable of connecting people across different regions of the country.
The celebration began traditionally with Saraswati Vandana and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp before Goddess Saraswati, invoking the blessings of the Goddess of Knowledge. The programme subsequently moved from ceremony to conversation, with students encouraged to participate rather than remain passive listeners.

Dr Jaya Singh, Head of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities at ICFAI University, Raipur, attended the programme as the chief resource person. She was welcomed with a sapling by the college.
Hindi as a Language that Connects
Addressing the students, Dr Singh deliberately moved away from the format of a formal lecture and chose interaction as the means of communicating her message.
“I am not here to give you a speech on language, but to interact with you in one of the sweetest languages of the world — a language that needs respect from its own people,” she said.
Speaking about the perception that Hindi can sometimes be difficult, she told the students that understanding the language changes that perception.
“Hindi is not so easy, but once understood, it is the easiest language to communicate in,” Dr Singh said.
Her interaction encouraged students to look at language beyond textbooks, examinations and grammatical rules and recognise its primary purpose — communication.

Pragati College Principal Dr Soumya Nayyar, addressing the gathering, described Hindi as a sweet and accessible language and drew upon her own experience of communicating in Hindi in different parts of India.
She said her experience of speaking Hindi across the country had demonstrated how effectively the language could connect people belonging to different regions and backgrounds.
The programme also gave students an opportunity to participate directly. Their interaction with the resource person added a conversational dimension to the Hindi Fortnight celebration and reinforced the college’s effort to make academic programmes participatory.
College Administrator Jyoti Thakur was present on the occasion along with faculty members and students.
K. N. Gajpal, Head of the Department of Education, proposed the vote of thanks. He expressed his appreciation to Dr Jaya Singh for joining Pragati College as the resource person and sharing her thoughts with the students. He also thanked Principal Dr Soumya Nayyar for taking time to participate in the celebration and encourage the students and organisers.

The Hindi Fortnight celebration reflected Pragati College’s emphasis on combining classroom learning with activities that encourage students to communicate, participate and engage with language in practical settings.
