Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has drawn international attention after The New York Times put his food-safety enforcement campaign in the spotlight, describing the IAS officer as a “Rock Star”.

The newspaper’s October 4 report carried the headline, “In India, a Food Safety Inspector Is a Rock Star,” while highlighting the unusual public profile Mundhe has acquired through his enforcement campaign in Maharashtra.

Mundhe has led a stringent drive against alleged food-safety and hygiene violations at restaurants, food businesses and other establishments. Reports say the campaign has involved surprise inspections as well as licence suspensions and temporary closures where violations were detected.

The drive has also extended to quick-commerce dark stores. According to reports, inspections have covered facilities associated with platforms including Blinkit and Zepto, besides restaurants and other food establishments.

Mundhe Responds to International Recognition

Mundhe, however, sought to shift attention away from personal recognition and towards the purpose of public administration.

“Good governance is not about making headlines. It is about making a difference,” he wrote while responding to the international coverage.

He further emphasised food safety, public protection and institutional credibility, arguing that consistent and impartial enforcement strengthens citizens’ faith in the system.

The New York Times recognition follows earlier international attention to Mundhe’s work. A BBC report published on September 27 had examined why certain Indian civil servants become public figures for the manner in which they perform their official responsibilities.

For Mundhe, the international recognition has therefore become less a story about a bureaucrat acquiring celebrity status and more a wider discussion about how visible and consistent enforcement can turn an everyday governance issue—food safety—into a matter of substantial public interest.
