Rekha Gupta, Harsh Malhotra Lead Major Political Induction Ahead of 2027 Civic Polls

New Delhi: In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has bolstered its municipal strength by inducting 16 councillors from the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP), a breakaway faction formed by former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors.

The induction ceremony was led by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra, marking one of the BJP’s biggest municipal expansions since assuming power in the national capital earlier this year.

The 16 councillors had split from the Aam Aadmi Party around 14 months ago over differences with the party leadership and subsequently formed the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP). Their decision to merge with the BJP is being viewed as a strategic move that could reshape political equations within the MCD.

Addressing the gathering, BJP leaders welcomed the councillors into the party, stating that the induction reflected growing confidence in the BJP’s governance and development agenda for Delhi. They asserted that the merger would strengthen the party’s grassroots network and enhance its ability to address civic issues more effectively.

Political observers believe the move is aimed at consolidating the BJP’s position before the crucial municipal elections scheduled for next year. The addition of experienced councillors is expected to provide the party with greater organizational strength at the ward level while increasing pressure on the Aam Aadmi Party, which continues to face internal challenges after losing power in the Assembly.

The BJP has already begun intensifying its preparations for the MCD polls by expanding its local leadership, strengthening booth-level organization, and reaching out to elected representatives across the capital. Party strategists see municipal governance as a key battleground that will influence Delhi’s political narrative in the coming years.

For the Aam Aadmi Party, the latest defections represent another setback in Delhi’s civic politics. The departure of councillors who once formed part of its municipal team is likely to trigger fresh political debate over the party’s internal cohesion and leadership.

With the municipal elections drawing closer, political parties are expected to step up campaigning, alliances, and organizational expansion. The BJP’s latest induction signals that the contest for control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has entered a new and decisive phase.
