Raipur: A 50 per cent concession in property registration fees is giving women in Chhattisgarh a direct financial incentive to own immovable assets in their names, with beneficiaries beginning to report substantial savings on registration costs.
The state government, under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, has reduced the registration fee applicable to documents transferring immovable property in favour of women from 4 per cent to 2 per cent of the property’s market value.
The initiative, taken with Finance and Registration Minister O.P. Choudhary, is intended not merely to reduce the cost of registration but also to encourage greater participation of women in property ownership and strengthen their long-term economic security.
For families purchasing land or other immovable property, the lower registration cost provides an immediate financial benefit when the asset is registered in a woman’s name. At the same time, ownership of property can give women a stronger economic stake and greater financial security.
Raigarh Woman Saves Nearly ₹25,000
The impact of the concession can be seen in the case of Sharmila Mishra of Raigarh, who recently registered land in her name and saved nearly ₹25,000 because of the reduction in the registration fee.
Mishra said the concession had considerably reduced the expense involved in registering the property and described the government’s decision as financially beneficial for women.
She said encouraging families to register property in women’s names could have a wider impact by strengthening women’s economic rights and providing them with greater social and financial security.
Mishra expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Finance and Registration Minister O.P. Choudhary for the initiative.
The reduction in the registration fee effectively links a financial concession with a broader social objective. By making property registration less expensive for women, the government is seeking to encourage more assets to be held in their names and thereby increase their participation in property ownership.
For beneficiaries such as Sharmila Mishra, however, the impact is already measurable: lower registration expenses today and an asset registered in her own name for the future.
