Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday August 20, 2026 announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the families of four workers from Kondagaon district who lost their lives in the devastating tunnel accident in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.

The Chief Minister has also directed that ₹50,000 each be provided to two workers from Kondagaon who were injured in the tragedy.

The accident occurred at an under-construction tunnel associated with the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project in Chamoli on August 13, when a sudden rush of water and debris entered the tunnel, trapping workers inside and triggering a major multi-agency rescue operation.

According to information released by the Chhattisgarh government, the four deceased workers from Kondagaon included two residents of Dhansuli village and one each from Madanar and Dahikonga. Two other workers from the district sustained injuries.

The mortal remains of the deceased workers were subsequently brought back to Kondagaon, where their last rites were performed in the presence of their families.

State Government Stands With Bereaved Families: Sai

Expressing deep grief over the deaths, Chief Minister Sai said the state government stood with the affected families with complete sensitivity in their hour of sorrow and would extend every possible assistance to them.

His announcement of financial assistance comes as the families in Kondagaon cope with the loss of workers who had travelled from Chhattisgarh to Uttarakhand for employment.

The Chamoli tragedy prompted a major rescue effort involving multiple agencies. Contemporary reports said NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, police and other personnel were involved in rescue and search operations inside the water- and sludge-filled tunnel.

Sai prayed for peace for the departed souls and strength for the bereaved families to endure their loss. He also wished the two injured workers a speedy recovery.

The Chief Minister’s relief announcement brings direct assistance from the Chhattisgarh government to the affected Kondagaon families following a tragedy hundreds of kilometres away in Uttarakhand.
