Police Commemoration Day Recalls Historic Sacrifice in Ladakh in 1959

Chief Minister Sai recalled the historical significance of October 21, explaining that Police Commemoration Day commemorates the sacrifice of 10 Indian police personnel who lost their lives during a confrontation with Chinese troops in Ladakh in 1959.

On October 21, 1959, Indian police personnel deployed near the India–Tibet border confronted a larger contingent of Chinese soldiers.

Ten personnel were killed in the confrontation, and their sacrifice became the foundation for the annual observance of Police Commemoration Day.

CM Sai said:

“Police Commemoration Day is not merely an occasion to pay tribute to our martyrs. It is also a day to renew our commitment to their ideals, their dedication to duty and the great tradition of service to the nation.”

He said that police and security forces continued to discharge their responsibilities under challenging circumstances, maintaining law and order and protecting citizens.

Their courage and professionalism, he observed, were essential to ensuring peace and stability in society.

The Chief Minister credited the coordination between the Union and state governments, along with the determination of security personnel, for improving the security situation.

He also acknowledged the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the campaign against Naxalism.

According to the Chief Minister, the combined efforts of the governments and security forces have created a new environment of confidence in Bastar.

From Fear and Violence to Roads, Schools and Healthcare in Bastar

Highlighting the changing conditions in Bastar, CM Sai said that areas once associated with violence and insecurity were increasingly witnessing the expansion of essential public services.

Road connectivity, electricity, education, healthcare, drinking water and communication facilities were reaching remote settlements.

He said that government programmes were gradually becoming more accessible to communities that had previously remained isolated because of difficult terrain and security challenges.

“In the areas of Bastar where fear and violence once prevailed, a new picture of development is now emerging. Roads, electricity, education, healthcare, drinking water and communication facilities are expanding rapidly. Government schemes and services are reaching remote villages, and people’s confidence in democratic institutions and governance is growing stronger.”

The Chief Minister referred to initiatives such as the Niyad Nellanar Scheme, PM-JANMAN and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan as important instruments for expanding facilities in remote and underserved tribal regions.

He stressed that security and development must advance together to achieve lasting improvements in living conditions.

Lasting Peace and Accelerated Development Are the Next Priorities

“Following the historic success achieved against Naxalism, our important responsibility is to make peace permanent and accelerate the pace of development. Our government is committed to taking Bastar and the whole of Chhattisgarh to new heights of prosperity and well-being.”
