India stopped the water of Chenab river from Baglihar dam, another tough decision amid tension with Pakistan

Impact on Pakistan due to suspension of Indus Water Treaty

India did not suspend the Indus Water Treaty even after the wars of 1965, 1971 and 1999 with Pakistan. But this time to teach Pakistan a lesson, the government has stopped this treaty, due to which the condition of the neighboring country has worsened.

After the Pahalgam terror attack, India has suspended the 65-year-old Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan. This is being considered the biggest diplomatic step taken by India to teach Pakistan a lesson. Now according to the information, India has stopped the flow of water going to Pakistan from the Baglihar dam on the Chenab river and similar steps are being planned at the Kishanganga dam on the Jhelum river.

Will also stop water from Kishanganga

A source aware of the matter told news agency PTI that India can regulate the time of water release from its side through Baglihar in Ramban, Jammu and Kishanganga Hydro Power Dam in North Kashmir. This means that the water reaching Pakistan through these dams can be reduced without any prior warning and the flow can also be increased. India had suspended this decades-old agreement after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The Indus Water Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 under the mediation of the World Bank. Under this, it was decided to share the water of the Indus River and its tributaries between the two countries. The Baglihar Dam built on the Chenab River has also been a matter of dispute between the two neighboring countries for a long time and Pakistan had previously sought mediation from the World Bank in this matter. Similarly, the Kishanganga Dam has also faced legal and diplomatic scrutiny.
Why is the Indus System important for PAK?

Under the agreement, Pakistan has been given control over the western rivers of the Indus System (Indus, Chenab and Jhelum). Pakistan uses about 93% of the water of the Indus River System for irrigation and power generation and about 80% of the agricultural land of the neighboring country depends on its water. Agriculture plays an important role in Pakistan’s economy. This is the reason why Pakistan is constantly threatening war after the agreement was postponed.
