Tehran: Iran’s navy said an oil tanker caught fire and became immobilised after striking a naval mine in a restricted area east of the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The military statement also reiterated that the waterway remained closed to vessels attempting to cross designated restricted and unsafe areas without prior coordination.

According to the navy’s public relations office, the tanker sustained damage while travelling through an area Iranian authorities described as prohibited and unsafe. The statement attributed the incident to the vessel’s failure to comply with navigation restrictions.

The Iranian Navy said the tanker was damaged and caught fire after striking naval mines, leaving it unable to move.

The navy did not disclose the vessel’s name, flag or crew size. The available statement also did not establish the condition of those aboard or provide a detailed assessment of the damage.

Iranian authorities used the announcement to reinforce their warning to commercial shipping. They said vessels attempting to navigate restricted areas without coordination would expose both ships and crews to serious danger.

The statement also accused US President Donald Trump of making misleading assurances about passage through the strategic waterway.

The navy warned that uncoordinated navigation through areas it designated as high-risk posed serious threats to vessels and their crews.

The announcement represents Iran’s stated restrictions on shipping. It does not, by itself, establish that all commercial movement through the Strait of Hormuz has stopped.

The reported tanker incident remains an Iranian military claim. Separately, the Associated Press reported Iranian claims that three tankers had struck mines, while noting that those accounts could not be independently confirmed.

The warnings come amid continuing tensions over maritime access and diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran. Restrictions affecting the strait remain a significant concern because of its role in international energy shipments
