875 film submissions received ahead of inaugural edition as J&K positions itself as a new destination for global cinema

Srinagar : Jammu & Kashmir is set to make its international debut on the global cinematic stage as the first International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir (IFFJK) 2026 has attracted an overwhelming response from filmmakers worldwide, receiving 875 entries from nearly 50 countries ahead of its inaugural edition.

Scheduled to be held from September 7 to 10, the four-day festival marks a significant milestone in the Union Territory’s cultural and creative journey. Organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Jammu & Kashmir, in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the event aims to establish the region as an emerging hub for filmmaking, artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.

Officials said the enthusiastic participation from across the globe reflects growing international confidence in Jammu & Kashmir as both a cinematic destination and a centre for creative storytelling. With the submission window remaining open until July 30, filmmakers still have an opportunity to enter their works for consideration.

The festival will feature an extensive programme of film screenings, masterclasses, panel discussions, interactive sessions and cultural showcases, bringing together filmmakers, producers, students, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts from India and abroad.

Beyond celebrating outstanding films, the festival seeks to showcase the breathtaking landscapes, cultural heritage and creative potential of Jammu & Kashmir before a global audience. Organisers believe the initiative will encourage international collaborations while strengthening the region’s identity as a preferred destination for film production.

IFFJK also aims to promote cultural dialogue through cinema, recognise excellence in filmmaking and foster greater understanding between nations by highlighting diverse storytelling traditions from around the world.

The foundation for the festival was laid on July 17, when Chief Minister Omar Abdullah formally launched the inaugural edition during a curtain-raiser event, inviting filmmakers, artists, producers and cinema lovers from across the world to participate in what is expected to become a landmark annual cultural event.

As preparations gather momentum, the inaugural International Film Festival of Jammu & Kashmir promises not only to celebrate world cinema but also to project the Union Territory as a destination where culture, creativity and natural beauty converge on the international stage.
