New Delhi: The extended Budget Session which will commence its three-day special sitting on Thursday April 16, 2026 is expected to deliberate on a legislative package comprising of three key bills — the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, the Delimitation Bill, 2026, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The government has said these are aimed at expediting the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies.

On Tuesday April 14, 2026, the Centre circulated draft Bills among MPs, related to the implementation of the women’s reservation law — the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam — and a fresh delimitation exercise. The draft proposals envisage increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha to up to 850 seats from the present 543, following a delimitation exercise based on the last published census, while also expanding State Assemblies to accommodate reservation for women.

The INDIA bloc parties took a unanimous decision to vote against the delimitation provisions in the Constitution (131st) Amendment Bill, 2026, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said at the end of a meeting of the alliance on Tuesday April 13, 2026, adding the Opposition is not against reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
