New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, remembering him as an extraordinary statesman whose vision, leadership and commitment to public service left an enduring mark on India.

Vajpayee, one of the most influential political leaders of post-Independence India and the first BJP leader to become Prime Minister, was born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior. He died in New Delhi on August 16, 2018.

Remembering the former Prime Minister, Modi said Vajpayee had devoted his life to serving the country and possessed a remarkable vision that distinguished his long political career.

“Remembering Atal Ji on his ‘Punya Tithi’. An extraordinary statesman blessed with remarkable vision, he dedicated his life to the service of our nation,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also recalled the lasting influence of Vajpayee’s words, political approach and work in public life.

“His words and efforts inspired generations, and his leadership strengthened our country,” Modi said.

Vajpayee served as Prime Minister three times, including a full term from 1999 to 2004. His years in office witnessed important developments in infrastructure, telecommunications, strategic policy and India’s international engagement.

Known for combining strong political convictions with an ability to communicate across ideological divisions, Vajpayee commanded respect beyond his own party. His parliamentary speeches, oratory and emphasis on democratic dialogue became defining elements of his public life.

Modi said Vajpayee’s commitment to governance and the welfare of ordinary citizens continued to offer guidance years after his death.

“His focus on good governance and public welfare will always continue to guide us,” the Prime Minister said.

Vajpayee was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2015 in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation.

His death anniversary is observed each year with tributes from political leaders and citizens remembering his contribution to Indian democracy, governance and public life.
