Prime Minister says families uprooted in 1947 rebuilt their lives from nothing and turned adversity into achievement

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to those who suffered during the Partition of India, recalling the enormous human cost of the upheaval while highlighting the courage and resilience of families who rebuilt their lives after losing homes and loved ones.

Marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14, Modi said Partition was a moment in history that “tore apart several lives”, uprooted families and inflicted immense suffering.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said, “Today we mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. We recall the courage of all those who were impacted by Partition.”

He recalled that families were uprooted and loved ones lost, but placed particular emphasis on what happened afterwards — the ability of displaced people to begin their lives again despite having lost virtually everything.

“At the same time, overcoming this, people rebuilt their lives from nothing, turned adversity into achievement and contributed immensely to our nation’s progress,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister said their journeys were a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and connected remembrance of the tragedy with the need to safeguard social harmony.

“May this day deepen our resolve to preserve harmony and brotherhood in our nation and collectively work towards building a Viksit Bharat,” he said.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day has been observed in India on August 14 since 2021 to remember those who lost their lives or were displaced during the Partition of 1947. The division of the subcontinent triggered one of the largest movements of people in modern history, as millions crossed newly created borders amid communal violence, loss and displacement.

Modi’s message this year notably combined remembrance of the suffering with recognition of the contribution subsequently made by displaced families to India’s development. Rather than allowing the painful memories of Partition to become a source of division, his appeal focused on harmony, brotherhood and national progress.
