Political stir intensifies after Dhankhar’s resignation, Deputy Chairman Harivansh meets President Murmu

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation has been accepted. Just a day before on Monday July 21 , 2025 , Dhankhar had sent a letter to President Murmu and said that he was resigning from the post. He had cited health reasons behind his resignation. After his resignation, the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were conducted by Deputy Chairman Harivansh on Tuesday. July 22, 2025 .

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh met President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday July 22, 2025 . This meeting took place at a time when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on Monday July 21, 2025 evening. Rashtrapati Bhavan also shared a picture of the meeting on X. In which it is written, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh met President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Let us tell you that on Monday July 21 , Jagdeep Dhankhar suddenly resigned on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. After which Harivansh presided over the proceedings of the morning session in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday July 22 . However, the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were adjourned till next day after some time.

The post of Chairman automatically became vacant

With the resignation of the Vice President, the post of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha also automatically became vacant. The Vice President is the ex-officio Chairman of the Upper House. In such a situation, now that the resignation has been accepted , the entire proceedings of the Rajya Sabha in the monsoon session will be run by Deputy Chairman Harivansh. Apart from this, this responsibility can also be given to the member authorised by the President.

Dhankhar was active in Rajya Sabha all day on Monday July 21, 2025

Earlier on Monday, Dhankhar was active in Rajya Sabha all day. In the morning, he advised the opposition to make Parliament a positive platform for dialogue and discussion and in the afternoon, while accepting the notice of impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma, he clarified the entire process. He also announced an inquiry into the double signature of an MP in the impeachment notice presented against Justice Shekhar Yadav.

Dhankhar’s health had deteriorated last week too

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post with immediate effect on Monday July 22 citing health reasons. In his resignation letter sent to President Draupadi Murmu, he said that he was taking this decision to give priority to health care and follow medical advice.

Although he appeared quite active and energetic in Rajya Sabha in recent months, his health was not well continuously. In March, he was admitted to AIIMS for a few days, after which doctors advised him to avoid travel outside the national capital.

After this, in June, during a program of Kumaon University in Nainital, Uttarakhand, he fainted on stage. Officials had said that it was very hot that day and the venue was very suffocating. Earlier this month, during his Kerala visit, his health deteriorated and he was supported by his wife Sudesh and an aide.

On July 17, while visiting Vatika developed by Delhi LG VK Saxena, Dhankhar started feeling unwell and had to sit and rest for some time. His wife gave him water. After which his condition improved.
