Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister hails conservation efforts as India’s Asiatic lion population rises to 891
Amaravati: Marking World Lion Day on Monday, August 10, 2026, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan highlighted the remarkable recovery of India’s Asiatic lion population and described the animal as an enduring symbol of the country’s wildlife heritage.
In a message posted on X, Kalyan said, “The roar of the Asiatic Lion is the roar of Bharat’s wild heritage.”
He appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav for efforts towards strengthening the long-term conservation of the Asiatic lion, while also acknowledging the contribution made over the years by governments, forest departments, conservationists, wildlife experts, frontline personnel and local communities.
Kalyan pointed to the increase in the Asiatic lion population from 411 in 2010 to 891 in 2025 as evidence of sustained conservation efforts.
Observed globally on August 10, World Lion Day seeks to raise awareness about lions, the threats confronting their populations and the importance of protecting their habitats.
The Asiatic lion holds a particularly important place in India’s natural heritage. Once distributed across a much wider geographical region, its surviving wild population is now concentrated in Gujarat, with the Gir landscape serving as its principal stronghold.
The recovery of the species represents one of India’s notable wildlife conservation achievements. From a population estimated at only around 20 in the early 20th century, the number of Asiatic lions has gradually recovered, reaching 891 according to the 2025 population estimation.
Beyond their symbolic importance, lions occupy a crucial position in the ecosystem. As apex predators, they help regulate herbivore populations and contribute to maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats.
Conservation efforts have also increasingly focused on expanding suitable habitat beyond the traditional Gir landscape. Project Lion, launched in 2020, has sought to strengthen conservation measures, habitat management, disease surveillance and protection of the species, while areas including the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary have assumed greater importance as the lion population expands.
For India, the resurgence of the Asiatic lion carries significance beyond numbers. The animal has long represented courage and strength and remains deeply embedded in the country’s cultural and natural heritage.
Kalyan’s World Lion Day message therefore placed the achievement in a broader context — recognising not merely the growth of a wildlife population but the collective responsibility required to ensure that the Asiatic lion continues to thrive for future generations.
