PM Modi wrote on X, ‘I thank my friend, President Putin, for sharing information about his phone call and his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful solution to the Ukraine dispute and supports all efforts in this regard.

I look forward to continued contact between us in the coming days.’ Let us tell you that US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India for buying oil from Russia.

He says that by buying oil from Russia, India is indirectly funding the Ukraine war. India had strongly objected to the US tariff.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement, ‘In recent times, the US has targeted India’s oil imports from Russia. We have already clarified our position on these issues.

Our oil imports from Russia are based on international market conditions and its purpose is to ensure energy security of India’s 1.4 billion people.

It is very unfortunate that the US has decided to impose additional tariffs on India when many other countries are also importing oil from Russia for their national interests. We reiterate that this step is unfair, wrong and absurd. India will take every necessary step to protect its national interests.’

After the meeting of the two leaders in Alaska, the Ministry of External Affairs had said in a statement, ‘India appreciates the progress made in the Alaska summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.’
