Bilaspur: A sensational case has come to light in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, where a 22-year-old youth in Devnagar of Koni police station area committed suicide after sharing a nude video of his girlfriend on Instagram. The incident took place on Thursday, May 15, 2025, when the girlfriend lodged a complaint at Koni police station about the video going viral. The youth had pleaded to talk to his girlfriend at the police station, but after the girlfriend refused, he hanged himself on a tree near his house and died.

According to the police, there was a rift between the youth and his 21-year-old girlfriend for some time. The youth suspected that his girlfriend was having an affair with someone else, due to which he uploaded her private video on Instagram on Thursday May 15, 2025 morning with the intention of taking revenge. As soon as the girlfriend came to know about the video going viral, she lodged a complaint at Koni police station. The police took immediate action and registered a case against the youth under sections 356 (2), 67 (A), and 67 (B) of the IT Act and called him to the police station.

At the police station, the youth told the police, “Please let me talk to my girlfriend once, otherwise I will die.” But the girlfriend flatly refused to talk to him. After this, the youth left the police station and committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his house. The family members took him down from the noose and rushed him to the hospital, but by then he had died.

The police took the body into custody and sent it for postmortem and started investigating the case.

Legal aspects and punishment –

Police said that sharing private videos or photos on social media is a serious offense under the IT Act, which carries a provision of up to 7 years in jail and heavy fine.

Koni police station in-charge has appealed to the people to use social media responsibly. He said, “Such activities are not only a legal offense, but also cause social and mental harm.” Police have asked people to respect privacy and avoid such acts.

This incident highlights the misuse of social media and lack of trust in relationships. Experts say that youth should be cautious before sharing personal content on digital platforms. Also, people suffering from mental stress have been advised to contact the Government of India’s Jeevansathi Helpline 18002333330 and Telemans Helpline 1800914416.
