The first session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly following the formation of the TVK government began today on Thursday June 18, 2026 . During the proceedings, the Governor made several remarks, stating that the state would continue to adhere to the two-language policy.

Chennai : Governor Vishwabhushan Arlekar stated on Thursday June 18, 2026 that the government would continue to follow the existing two-language policy of instruction—Tamil and English. He reiterated the state government’s opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP).

He noted that the Tamil Nadu government believes the release of central funds should not be linked to the implementation of the three-language formula and urged the central government to reconsider its stance.

What did the Governor say in his address?

Governor Arlekar remarked that the assembly elections have brought about a transformation in Tamil Nadu’s political history, the likes of which had never been seen before. He mentioned that the Chief Minister had submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Modi regarding the state’s long-pending demands. These demands include critical issues concerning the Mekedatu dam and the welfare of fishermen. The Governor announced that a resolution would be passed in the Assembly.

Report on financial transfers to be released

This resolution will demand a fair share of financial transfers to Tamil Nadu from the taxes collected by the central government. He also announced the formation of a special legal committee to ensure equitable financial transfers; this committee will take the matter to the Supreme Court. Governor Arlekar stated in the Assembly that a report regarding the Centre’s “discriminatory attitude” towards financial transfers would be published. He assured that Tamil Nadu would receive its due financial share from the Centre.

Debt has risen over five years

The government intends to pressure the Centre to uphold the state’s welfare and rights. The Governor highlighted that Tamil Nadu’s financial situation has deteriorated significantly. A White Paper was released to expose the truth behind the previous government’s “fiscal mismanagement.” Over the past five years, the state’s debt has nearly doubled to ₹10 lakh crore, amounting to 28.3 percent of the GSDP. There is a debt burden of over ₹1 lakh on every citizen. Accusing the DMK government of corruption, the Governor stated that tax revenue has declined from 5.93 percent to 5.40 percent.
