Washington: US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that the United States will win its war with Iran “very soon”, while leaving open the possibility of further military strikes before the November midterm elections.
Speaking to Fox News on the sidelines of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club on Sunday, Trump linked an end to the conflict with an expected decline in global oil prices.
“I think what’s going to happen is we’re going to win this war very soon, and as soon as we win it, the oil will go down, way down to what it was before the war,” Trump said.
Asked whether US military strikes against Iran could resume before the midterm elections, Trump declined to rule out the possibility.
“I don’t want to say that. I don’t want to say that. I mean, it’s possible, but I just don’t want to say that,” he said.
Nuclear Issue Remains at Centre of US Position
Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remained a central US objective, describing nuclear deterrence as “key to the whole thing”. He also claimed that Washington was prevailing through a combination of military and economic pressure on Tehran.
His latest remarks come days after he told the UN General Assembly that Iran must reach an agreement over its nuclear programme, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, meanwhile, said Tehran was prepared to resist further military action while remaining open to diplomacy. In an interview with NBC News, Araghchi said Iran was prepared even for what he termed a “doomsday war”, but maintained that a diplomatic route remained available.
The remarks come as regional mediators continue efforts to revive negotiations. Trump told Axios on Sunday that he expected US negotiators to hold further talks with Iran this week, despite Washington having rejected Tehran’s latest proposal.
