New Delhi : Senior leader and CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has passed away. He breathed his last at the age of 72. He was suffering from respiratory disease for a long time. He was admitted to AIIMS recently.
72-year-old CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was first admitted to AIIMS on August 19. He was put on respiratory support at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia and there was nothing serious. The CPI(M) leader had recently undergone cataract surgery.
Born in a Tamil family in Chennai
Sitaram Yechury was born on 12 August 1952 in a Tamil family in Chennai. His father Sarveshwar Somayajula Yechury and mother Kalpakam Yechury are natives of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. His father was an engineer in the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. His mother was a government officer.
Studied till 10th in Hyderabad, higher education in Delhi
Sitaram Yechury grew up in Hyderabad and studied at All Saints High School in Hyderabad till class 10. He was brought to Delhi during the Telangana movement of 1969. He took admission in President’s Estate School, New Delhi and stood first at the all-India level in the Central Board of Secondary Education Higher Secondary Examination. After this, he did BA in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. (Hons.) and M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), securing first division in both. He joined JNU to pursue a PhD in economics, which was cancelled upon his arrest during the Emergency.
Started politics in 1974
Yechury started student politics in 1974 by joining the Student Federation of India. A few days after this, he became a member of CPI M. Yechury was arrested and sent to jail during the Emergency.
Received the Best MP Award in 2016
Sitaram Yechury has been the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the leader of the party’s parliamentary group. He was awarded the Best MP Award in Rajya Sabha in 2016. He was arrested while staying in JNU during the Emergency. After this, he was elected President of JNU Students Union three times in a row. In 1984, he was included in the Central Committee of CPI M. In 2015, he was elected General Secretary of the party. Yechury was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in 2005. He raised many issues in the House.
He also gave a statement on the Kolkata rape murder case
He recently gave a statement on the Kolkata incident. He also supported the opposition coalition India in the petition filed regarding the new criminal laws. He has a distinct identity as a leftist leader. He always raises his voice for leftist ideology. RIP
