Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride as Archbishop George Jacob Koovakad from Kerala was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope Francis. The prestigious appointment makes Archbishop Koovakad one of the highest-ranking officials in the Catholic Church, representing India on the global stage.
In a statement, PM Modi congratulated the Archbishop, hailing his achievement as a moment of pride for the nation, particularly for the Christian community in India. “His elevation as Cardinal is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his faith and service to humanity,” Modi remarked.
Archbishop Koovakad, known for his humility and dedication, has served the Church in various capacities over the years. A native of Kochi, Kerala, he has been recognised for his efforts in fostering interfaith dialogue and promoting peace. His elevation is seen as a recognition of the contributions of the Indian Christian community to global Catholicism.
The ceremonial elevation, known as the consistory, took place at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, where Pope Francis formally inducted the Archbishop into the College of Cardinals. With this honor, Cardinal Koovakad becomes eligible to participate in the election of a future Pope and assume advisory roles within the Vatican.
Leaders from across India, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, lauded the Archbishop’s achievement. The Christian community in Kerala held special prayers and celebrations to mark the historic occasion.
