The Railways on Sunday February 16,2025 announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those killed in the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. The Railways said that Rs 2.5 lakh will be given to the seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh to those with minor injuries.
New Delhi : The Delhi Police has begun investigation into the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday, in which at least 18 people died in a stampede at the railway station in Delhi. Sources said the police will examine CCTV footage to find out what happened before the stampede began. “Our main aim is to investigate the main cause of the stampede. We will collect all the data of CCTV footage and announcements made during the stampede,” a police source said

Prayagraj Express was on platform 14 only: Delhi Police
On the stampede case, Delhi Police said that the confusion happened due to the announcement of trains with the same name starting with ‘Prayagraj’. The announcement of Prayagraj Special arriving on platform 16 created confusion, as Prayagraj Express was already on platform 14. Those who could not reach their train on platform 14 thought that their train was arriving on platform 16, which led to a stampede. Besides, there were four Prayagraj-bound trains, three of which were running late, leading to unexpected congestion.

Eyewitness Tushar narrated the story of the accident
After the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, an eyewitness Tushar told that when I went to the platform, I saw that there was a lot of crowd there. A team of 15 doctors is treating the injured
According to information received from LNJP hospital sources, most of the patients have injuries in their lower limbs and some have bone injuries. Victim’s son narrates eyewitness account of the accident
Victim’s son Ankit said that his mother Manisha Devi was on platform number 12 yesterday. Suddenly information was issued that the train would arrive on 14. - Train number 15631, Barmer-Guwahati Express train service which will depart from Barmer on 17.02.25. The diverted route will be operated via Kanpur Central-Lucknow-Barabanki-Gorakhpur.
Partially cancelled train services (from originating station)
- Train number 14118, Bhiwani-Prayaraj Express train service which will depart from Bhiwani on 16.02.25 will operate only till Kanpur Central instead of Prayagraj.
- Train No. 14117, Prayagraj- Bhiwani Express train service will operate from Kanpur Central instead of Prayagraj on 17.02.25 at its scheduled time.

- Train No. 22308, Bikaner-Howrah Express train service will depart from Bikaner on 16.02.25 four hours late from its scheduled time.

Eyewitness porter told what he saw
A person working as a porter at the railway station said that I have been working as a porter since 1981. But I have never seen such a crowd before. Prayagraj Special was to leave from platform number 12, but it was shifted to platform number 16. When the crowd waiting on platform 12 and the crowd waiting from outside were trying to reach platform 16, people started colliding with each other and falling on the escalators and stairs.
Further, he said that many people gathered there to stop the crowd. We picked up at least 15 bodies and put them in the ambulance. There were only shoes and clothes on the platform.
