Negotiations are set to resume between India and the United States for a trade agreement. The Commerce Ministry said in a statement that discussions between the two sides in the US have been positive.

US President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on the import of patented and branded medicines, which will come into effect on October 1. A 50% tariff has also been imposed on furniture. Meanwhile, a major update has come regarding the India-US trade agreement.

According to an official statement from the Indian Commerce Ministry, the Indian delegation, headed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, held several meetings with the US from September 22-24, 2025. There have been positive reactions from both sides, and it is believed that an agreement on tariff reduction may soon be reached.

In addition to interacting with leading American businesses and investors, the Union Minister also met with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador-Designate to India Sergio Gor.

Negotiations for an early deal between the two countries

The statement described the talks with the US government as “constructive,” with both sides considering a potential framework for a new trade agreement. Officials clarified that discussions will soon be held to reach a mutually beneficial agreement between the two sides. The talks with US businesses received a positive response, with leaders of several companies expressing confidence in India’s growth and a desire to expand operations in the country.

Government officials also told Business Today TV that talks are still ongoing. An official from India’s Commerce Ministry said that positive discussions are taking place. India has demanded the removal of a 25% tariff, while Washington is pressuring New Delhi to expand its energy trade with the US.

What did the Ministry say on the Pharma Tariff?

A statement from the Ministry regarding the new tariffs on pharmaceuticals stated that they are also studying the potential impact on India’s pharmaceutical sector, although clarity is awaited upon the release of a complete document. India remains one of Washington’s closest partners, yet President Donald Trump has imposed additional tariffs on Russian oil imports on New Delhi.
