Reports indicate that a section within the AIADMK is inclined to support Vijay and his party

Chennai: As Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam intensifies efforts to form the government in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK leader C. V. Shanmugam said on Wednesday that the party will take a final decision on whether to support TVK.

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Shanmugam said,“The party has to take the decision,” as AIADMK MLAs gathered at his residence amid speculation of talks between party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and TVK chief Vijay.

Reports indicate that a section within the AIADMK is inclined to support Vijay and his party. There are also indications of dissatisfaction among some MLAs regarding Palaniswami’s leadership.

TVK, which has secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly—10 short of the majority mark—is more likely to seek support from smaller parties such as the Congress and Left parties.

TVK chief Vijay has also sought time to meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar as part of the government formation process, according to party sources.

Earlier, Vijay addressed the people of Tamil Nadu on X for the first time after the election results, recalling initial skepticism about TVK’s launch and crediting voters for the party’s strong performance.

Meanwhile, tensions have escalated within the Secular Progressive Alliance, with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam criticising the Congress amid speculation that it may support TVK.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai termed the Congress’s stance “short-sighted” and accused it of “backstabbing” alliance partners, warning of broader political consequences ahead of the 2029 general elections.

In parallel developments, Governor Rajendra Arlekar accepted the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and his Council of Ministers, while asking him to continue in office until a new government is formed.

TVK’s emergence as a debutant party breaking the long-standing DMK-AIADMK dominance signals a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether a TVK-led coalition takes shape and how the new government will be formed.
