Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Government here on Tuesday August 4, 2026 has initiated the next phase of consultations for the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by inviting suggestions and opinions from citizens, institutions and various stakeholders across the state.
The move is part of the government’s efforts to examine the feasibility of introducing a common civil law governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing religion-specific personal laws with a uniform legal framework applicable to all citizens in accordance with constitutional provisions.
To facilitate the consultation process, the state government has constituted a five-member high-level committee, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, to study the legal, administrative and social aspects of implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Chhattisgarh.
The committee has invited representations from government departments, non-government organisations, social and religious institutions, community groups, political parties and individual citizens. Stakeholders have been asked to submit their suggestions and memoranda by October 15, 2026, to assist the committee in preparing its recommendations.
According to the committee, the consultation process will include a comprehensive review of the state’s existing civil laws relating to personal matters, along with inputs received from different sections of society before a final report is prepared.
Justice Desai-Led Panel to Study Existing Civil Laws
The committee will examine the current legal framework governing personal civil matters in the state and assess how a Uniform Civil Code could be structured to ensure legal uniformity while considering constitutional and administrative requirements.
The public consultation exercise is expected to provide the committee with diverse perspectives before it finalises its recommendations for the state government.
Background
The Uniform Civil Code has remained one of the country’s most debated legal reforms. Uttarakhand became the first state to implement the UCC, while Goa continues to follow a common civil code. Several other states, including Gujarat, Assam and Madhya Pradesh, have also initiated measures related to the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code.
If implemented, Chhattisgarh would join the growing list of states moving towards a uniform civil law framework.
