High-speed SUV crashes into divider while Aban was reportedly on his way to meet his jailed brothers; one friend also dies, three others injured
Jhansi: Aban Ahmad, the youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, was killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district on Thursday August 6, 2026 after the SUV in which he was travelling crashed into a road divider. One of his friends also lost his life in the accident, while three other occupants sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on the Kanpur-Jhansi Highway near the Poonch area when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed.
Senior Superintendent of Police BBGTS Murthy said preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding was the likely cause of the accident.
“Two people died in the accident, while three others sustained injuries. Preliminary inquiry suggests that the vehicle was travelling at a very high speed and became uncontrollable before crashing into the divider,” SSP Murthy told reporters.
Police identified the deceased as Aban Ahmad, a resident of Prayagraj, and Sonu, son of Raja. The injured were shifted to the Government Medical College, where they are receiving treatment.
Investigators said Aban was travelling to Jhansi Jail to meet his two brothers, who are currently lodged there. One of the injured passengers, Mohammad Umar, told reporters from his hospital bed that the SUV lost control while travelling at high speed.
“We were on our way to Jhansi jail to meet Aban’s brother when the car, which was moving at high speed, suddenly went out of control,” Umar said.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Arvind Kumar confirmed that the crash took place on the Kanpur-Jhansi road and said further investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
Background
Aban Ahmad was the youngest of Atiq Ahmad’s five sons and the twin brother of Ahjam Ahmad.
The Ahmad family has remained in the public spotlight following a series of high-profile criminal cases. In April 2023, Aban’s elder brother Asad Ahmad, who was wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, was killed in a police encounter near Jhansi.
Just days later, on April 15, 2023, Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead at point-blank range by three assailants posing as journalists while they were being escorted by police for a medical examination in Prayagraj. The killings, captured live on television, drew nationwide attention.
Atiq Ahmad’s wife, Shaista Parveen, who is also an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, remains absconding, according to police.
Authorities said the family has been informed about Thursday’s accident, while further investigation into the crash continues.
