Raipur: Chhattisgarh Higher Education Minister Tank Ram Verma has directed the department to remove obstacles holding up the recruitment of 700 assistant professors, while also accelerating direct recruitment against 595 vacant teaching posts and clearing long-pending promotion cases in government colleges.
The directions came during a departmental review at Mantralaya in Nava Raipur on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, where Verma examined progress on decisions taken at the previous meeting on July 1. Rather than allowing recruitment and service matters to remain caught in administrative procedures, the minister fixed deadlines for several pending issues and sought accountability for delays.

The minister also reviewed the admission process for the 2026-27 academic session in government colleges and sought faster action on direct recruitment against 595 vacant posts.
Deadlines Set for Recruitment, Pay and Academic Administration
Taking a serious view of pending promotions to graduate principal posts, Verma directed officials to complete the required proceedings by September 15, 2026. The department was also asked to review action taken in cases where professors were allegedly promoted despite being ineligible.Verma expressed concern that delays in granting senior and selection-grade pay scales were forcing assistant professors to approach courts for relief. He sought details of pending litigation and petitions involving the department and ordered that all eligible pending cases be disposed of and necessary orders issued by October 1, 2026.

The minister also sought a detailed status report on PhD approvals and action taken on complaints forwarded by his office.
Financial management came under scrutiny as well. Expressing dissatisfaction over incomplete budget information sought at the previous meeting, Verma directed officials to submit a college-wise statement of allocations made to every government college for the 2026-27 financial year.

To strengthen academic quality, the department will also undertake regular surprise inspections of the teaching work performed by guest lecturers in colleges.
Verma proposed a new calendar for increasing seats in government and private colleges. Under the proposed system, colleges would submit requests for additional seats by December and approvals would be completed by January, reducing last-minute complications and errors before admissions.
For professional courses such as Law and B.Ed, officials were instructed to dispose of online applications received up to December 31 within the prescribed timeframe.
The minister further directed the constitution of a special team to visit New Delhi for discussions concerning NCTE requirements, including NAAC grading conditions for the four-year B.Ed programme. Preparatory work was also ordered to align student intake with Bar Council of India norms prescribing 60 students per section.
Secretary Avinash Champawat, Commissioner Rita Yadav and other senior Higher Education Department officials attended the meeting.
