India is set to take centre stage in global diplomacy as New Delhi prepares to host the BRICS 2026 Summit, bringing leaders of the influential grouping together for discussions on economic cooperation, development and major international challenges.

The New Delhi summit assumes particular significance as BRICS has evolved from its original five-member framework into a broader grouping representing a substantial part of the developing world. Its expanding footprint has also increased expectations that the platform will give emerging economies a stronger voice in discussions on global governance and development.

India at the Centre of BRICS Diplomacy

For New Delhi, the summit provides an opportunity to advance an approach based on dialogue, practical cooperation and respect for the priorities of developing countries. Economic resilience, technology and innovation, sustainable development, trade and investment, energy security and stronger people-to-people ties are expected to remain important areas of engagement.

India has consistently advocated reforms in international institutions so that contemporary global realities and the aspirations of emerging and developing economies receive greater representation.

The gathering also comes at a time when the international environment is being shaped by geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, changing supply chains and rapid technological transformation. Against this backdrop, BRICS members will have an opportunity to explore areas where cooperation can continue despite differences on individual international issues.

For India, hosting the summit is also an opportunity to demonstrate its growing diplomatic role as a bridge between developed and developing economies while keeping the concerns of the Global South prominently on the international agenda.

“The stage is set for the BRICS 2026 Summit in New Delhi,” Shah said, signalling India’s preparedness for the high-level gathering.
