Michigan: US President Donald Trump names JD Vance and Marco Rubio among the Republican figures who could contest the 2028 presidential election, while saying it is too early to identify a clear front-runner. Speaking ahead of a rally in Michigan, Trump expresses confidence in the party’s leadership options and contrasts them with those of the Democrats.
Trump Highlights Republican Leadership Options
In an interview with FOX 2’s Roop Raj, Trump is asked about potential candidates for the next presidential election.
“I could tell you who I think, but it’s a little bit early,” Trump says.
He then identifies Vance and Rubio among the figures who could emerge in the contest.
“We have great names — you have JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and many others. We have a great bench; they [Democrats] have no bench,” he adds.
The remarks offer an early indication of the leaders Trump sees as potential contenders, without identifying a preferred successor.
No Clear Front-Runner Named
Trump’s reference to several possible candidates leaves the prospective Republican field open.
While praising Vance and Rubio, he stresses that the party has other strong figures who could seek the presidency. His comments do not constitute a formal endorsement or confirm a campaign announcement by either leader.
The criticism of the Democrats forms part of Trump’s broader claim that Republicans have a stronger pool of potential presidential candidates.
Energy Security Also Features in Remarks
Earlier, while departing for the Michigan rally, Trump also addresses geopolitical and energy challenges arising from the Russia–Ukraine war.
He reiterates that Washington would not allow global energy security to be compromised by the continuing conflict.
The comments place international energy concerns alongside the domestic political questions surrounding the Republican Party’s future leadership.
