MCD Mayor: Aam Aadmi Party has again elected the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD). AAP candidate and councilor elected from Devnagar Mahesh Khinchi has won the Mayor election. He defeated BJP candidate Kishan Lal by just 3 votes. Let us inform you that the election for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation was held on Thursday November 14, 2024 . 265 votes were cast for the post of Mayor. Out of these, 2 votes were declared invalid. Out of 263 votes, AAP candidate Mahesh Khinchi got 133 votes while BJP candidate Kishan Lal got 130 votes only .
Shaili Oberoi was on extension
After Shaili Oberoi, councilor Mahesh Khinchi from Devnagar became the mayor. Shaili was on extension. At the time of mayoral elections in April 2024, BJP and AAP had declared candidates. But, the file to decide the presiding officer was returned. It was said that there is no recommendation of CM on the file. The current mayor will remain in the post till the new mayor is elected. Actually, the then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was in jail then. In such a situation, he could not make the recommendation. Since then the election of the mayor was pending.
Mayor election is held in April every year
Let us tell you, the election of the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation is held every year in April. When the general elections of the corporation were held in December 2022, AAP had won 134 seats. After this, AAP councilor Dr. Shaili Oberoi became the mayor in February 2023. When the financial year ended, Shaili was again elected mayor in the mayoral elections held in April 2023. The mayor election of April 2024 could not be held. According to the MCD Act, the first year of the Mayor’s post is reserved for women councillors, the second for general and the third year for councillors from the Scheduled Castes. The last 2 years are for the General category.

Before the final process of voting for the councillors, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari arrived and casts his vote. During this, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal was absent.
