Amidst Iran Tensions, Trump Calls PM Modi for the First Time; Strategy Formulated on the Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has spoken with PM Modi over the phone regarding the situation in the Middle East. Both leaders emphasized the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.

Major news is emerging regarding the conflict with Iran. For the first time since the joint Israeli-American strikes on Iran on February 28, US President Donald Trump has spoken with PM Modi over the phone. Details of this conversation were shared by the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, in a post on X. Regarding the exchange between the two leaders, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore wrote on X: “President Donald Trump just spoke with Prime Minister Modi. They discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.”

This call between PM Modi and Trump is of immense significance. This is because Trump had recently issued an ultimatum to Iran regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as the closure of the Strait is impacting oil and gas prices as well as global supply chains. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that any obstruction in the Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable. PM Modi reiterated this stance in the Lok Sabha on Monday and in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. PM Modi asserted that any form of attack on civilians, commercial vessels, or the Strait of Hormuz itself is unacceptable.

It has been nearly a month since the conflict with Iran began. On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran. These attacks resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Furthermore, several prominent figures within Iran’s military and political leadership were killed in the strikes.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as the transit route for approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply. Throughout the conflict, Iran has effectively kept the Strait closed. Consequently, global oil supplies are being disrupted. This situation is critical for India, as the country is the world’s third-largest importer of crude oil. Trump has already asked NATO nations and several other countries—such as Britain, France, China, and Japan—to send warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz; however, Europe and China have not offered much cooperation.

Now, Trump has called PM Narendra Modi and discussed the Strait of Hormuz.
