New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, September 14, 2026 congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team on winning the Asia Cup, describing the victory as a proud moment for Indian cricket and expressing hope that the achievement would inspire millions of youngsters across the country to take up sport and excel.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in Sunday’s final to claim the title, completing a campaign in which the team’s confidence and consistency drew praise from the Prime Minister.

“A proud moment for Indian cricket! Congratulations to the Women’s team on winning the Asia Cup,” Modi said in a post on X.

The Prime Minister particularly praised the manner in which the players performed throughout the tournament.

“The confidence of the players, their consistency and remarkable spirit were on full display throughout the tournament,” he said.

A Victory Beyond the Trophy

While the Asia Cup adds another major title to Indian women’s cricket, Modi placed particular emphasis on the wider impact the team’s success could have on aspiring young players.

“May this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine,” the Prime Minister said.

The message reflects the growing visibility of women’s cricket in India, where performances on the international stage are increasingly providing young girls with sporting role models and demonstrating that opportunities at the highest level are no longer confined to men’s cricket.

The emphatic 72-run victory over Sri Lanka in the final provided a fitting conclusion to India’s campaign, with the margin underlining the team’s command of the title clash.

For the players, the trophy represents sporting achievement. For the next generation watching them, however, the victory could carry an equally important message — that the path from a local cricket ground to representing India is one worth dreaming about.
