India brought down the curtain on its Asian Games 2026 campaign in Aichi-Nagoya with a dramatic late flourish, finishing fourth in the medal standings with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.

The final numbers, however, tell only part of the story. After a campaign in which several established disciplines did not always produce the anticipated results, Indian athletes mounted a striking comeback towards the end. Eleven of the country’s 21 gold medals arrived during the final two days.

Saturday alone brought five golds across five sports — archery, golf, wrestling, cricket and hockey — transforming the complexion of India’s closing weekend.

Kumkum creates archery history

Teenager Kumkum Mohod emerged as one of the faces of India’s campaign.

The 17-year-old defeated South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a tense women’s individual recurve final to become the first Indian woman to win an individual recurve gold at the Asian Games. She had earlier overcome formidable opposition on her way to the title and also secured an individual Olympic quota place for India.

Indian archery finished the Games with nine medals, including five golds, making it one of the country’s strongest disciplines at Aichi-Nagoya.

Pranavi Urs breaks new ground in golf

Pranavi Urs produced another landmark performance, becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games golf gold.

The 23-year-old finished at 15-under 265 to take the individual crown and also contributed to India’s silver medal in the women’s team competition alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar.

Her triumph added an unexpected but significant chapter to India’s Asian Games history.

Cricket retains crown

India’s men’s cricket team successfully defended its title with a 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final.

India posted 211 for six, powered by Abhishek Sharma’s 61 from 28 balls and an unbeaten 51 from 22 deliveries by Tilak Varma. Pakistan finished on 192 for six.

The victory ensured another cricket gold for India and formed part of the country’s decisive final-day surge.

Hockey gold brings Olympic qualification

The Indian men’s hockey team completed its campaign in commanding fashion, defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the final to retain the Asian Games crown.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, while Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra also found the net. The victory additionally secured India’s direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The men’s triumph followed the Indian women’s team’s gold, making Aichi-Nagoya particularly memorable for Indian hockey.

Aman Sehrawat strikes gold

Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat added another major title to his career by winning the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling gold.

Sehrawat defeated North Korea’s reigning world champion Chong Song Han 10-7 in the final, improving on the bronze medal he had won at the previous Asian Games.

India’s wrestlers finished with six medals — two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Fourth place, but below Hangzhou tally

India’s 85-medal haul was enough for fourth place, but represented a decline from its record-breaking performance at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Yet Aichi-Nagoya produced several significant firsts and new champions. Kumkum Mohod’s breakthrough in recurve archery, Pranavi Urs’ historic golf title, Aman Sehrawat’s wrestling gold and the successful title defences by India’s cricket and hockey teams ensured that the campaign ended with momentum rather than disappointment.

The final weekend, in particular, demonstrated the breadth of India’s medal challenge: five different sports delivered gold on the concluding day, turning what had been an uneven campaign into a fourth-place finish with 21 Asian Games champions.
