NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu has congratulated the Indian contingent for its performance at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, as India concluded the continental sporting event with 85 medals and fourth place in the overall standings.
India’s final tally comprised 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, making Aichi-Nagoya the country’s second-highest Asian Games medal haul after the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
President Murmu said the Games had witnessed outstanding performances by Indian athletes and expressed pride in every member of the contingent who represented the country with dedication and commitment.
She particularly acknowledged the qualities behind the athletes’ achievements, saying:
“The hard work, skill and perseverance of our athletes have brought great honour to the nation.”
Golds Across Team and Individual Events
India’s campaign produced significant performances across a broad range of disciplines. Athletics emerged as the country’s largest contributor with 24 medals, followed by shooting with 15 and archery with nine. Boxing and wrestling contributed six medals each.
Team sports also provided major moments during the campaign, with Indian sides securing important gold medals in hockey, cricket and kabaddi. India’s men’s hockey team concluded its campaign with a 5-1 victory over Malaysia in the final, securing the country’s 21st gold medal of the Games.
There were also several individual breakthroughs. India’s campaign included historic achievements in archery, shooting and golf, alongside medals from established performers and emerging athletes.
A Campaign Beyond the Medal Count
The 85-medal tally was lower than India’s record haul at Hangzhou, but the Aichi-Nagoya campaign produced several firsts and performances of longer-term significance for Indian sport.
It also demonstrated India’s medal-winning presence across multiple disciplines rather than dependence on only a small number of sports. Athletics, shooting and archery together accounted for a substantial share of the country’s medals, while success in team competitions added another dimension to the campaign.orea. China topped the medal standings, while hosts Japan finished second and South Korea third.
The 20th Asian Games officially concluded in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday after two weeks of competition. The Olympic Council of Asia handed over the flag to Doha, Qatar, which will host the next Asian Games in 2030.
President Murmu’s message brought the focus back to the athletes themselves—the years of preparation, discipline and persistence behind the medals—and acknowledged the entire Indian contingent for representing the country on one of Asia’s biggest sporting stages.
