Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has worsened significantly, with the death toll from this year’s floods rising to 95 after six more fatalities were reported over the past 24 hours. According to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 1.6 lakh people are now affected across 14 districts, highlighting the growing humanitarian challenge in the state.

The latest casualties include two deaths each in Sivasagar and Biswanath districts, while one person each lost their lives in Golaghat and Morigaon after being caught in floodwaters.

The number of affected people has increased sharply since Tuesday, when around 1.22 lakh residents across five districts were impacted. Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district with over 57,000 people affected, followed by Golaghat with nearly 34,000 and Jorhat with approximately 25,000 residents facing the impact of flooding.

To support displaced families, the state administration is operating 105 relief camps and relief distribution centres across six districts, where more than 44,500 people have taken shelter. Relief teams continue to supply essential food items, including rice, pulses, salt and edible oil, to affected communities.

The ASDMA reported that floodwaters have inundated 563 villages, while nearly 16,952 hectares of agricultural land have suffered damage. Several embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure have also been affected, disrupting transportation and connectivity in many areas.

Authorities said the Dhansiri River continues to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh, keeping nearby areas under close watch. The floods have also severely impacted livestock, with over 35,000 domestic animals and poultry affected and more than 8,500 animals reportedly washed away.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood-affected areas to review the situation on the ground and monitor ongoing rescue and relief operations. He directed officials to ensure timely assistance reaches affected families and stressed the need for continuous monitoring as water levels remain high in several parts of the state.
