  • Salary Equivalent to Police Officers to be Granted Based on ‘Equal Pay for Equal Work’ Principle
  • State Government Directed to Comply with Order Within Three Months

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Saturday March 14, 2026 has delivered a significant and historic verdict in favor of approximately 10,000 Home Guard personnel in the state of Chhattisgarh. Based on the principle of ‘Equal Pay for Equal Work,’ the Court has directed the State Government to provide Home Guard personnel with salaries and other benefits equivalent to those of police officers.

Special Leave Petition Dismissed

Furthermore, while dismissing the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the administration, the Court directed that compliance with this order be ensured within a period of three months. In 2022, Home Guard personnel serving in the Bilaspur district had filed a petition in the High Court, demanding an equal pay scale for equal work.

Directive for Equal Pay Scale

Accepting the petition, the High Court had directed the State Government to grant an equal pay scale. Citing non-compliance with this order, two Home Guard personnel filed a contempt petition against the government. The High Court subsequently issued directives to ensure compliance with the order within a stipulated timeframe.

Subsequently, the State Government filed a writ appeal challenging the High Court’s order, which was dismissed by the High Court. Ultimately, the Chhattisgarh government filed an SLP in the Supreme Court, which the Supreme Court also dismissed.
