Chhattisgarh now leads the nation in complex cardiac treatments – Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai

Raipur: A symbol of the excellence of modern medical science in the state, the team of doctors at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, the state’s oldest and largest medical college, and its affiliated Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, have consistently set records in complex treatments that everyone can be proud of.

The latest example occurred in the Cardiology Department of the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), where the sixth Beckman Total Physiological Pacing in the country and the first in any government institution was successfully performed on a 68-year-old female patient.

According to doctors, this complex procedure had not been performed until now, even at top institutions like AIIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh. Beckman Total Physiological Pacing means controlling the heartbeat entirely through the natural conduction system, ensuring a stable and safe heart rate for the patient over a long period of time.

It’s worth mentioning that while there have been several cases of lead placement in the left bundle or His bundle at ACI and other government cardiac institutions, this is the first case of lead placement in the right atrium, or Beckman’s bundle. This allows the heartbeats of both chambers to be controlled by the natural electrical pathway (conduction system).

Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of Cardiology at ACI, explained that the patient, a resident of Raipur, suffered from a serious heart condition called sick sinus syndrome. In this disease, the cells that control the heartbeat (pacemaker cells) become damaged, causing irregular heartbeats. Typically, ventricular or left bundle pacing is performed in such cases, but this patient’s heart was weak and atrial rhythm was irregular. Ventricular pacing alone posed a risk of heart failure and rapid heartbeat.

For this reason, the ACI team decided to perform Beckman Total Physiological Pacing. In this procedure, pacemaker leads were implanted in the atrium, the heart’s natural electrical structure. This technique helps the heart beat normally and significantly reduces the risk of heart failure.

The procedure was completed as follows:

First, electrophysiological mapping of the left bundle branch was performed. Then, the Beckman bundle in the right atrium was similarly mapped and leads were implanted. This ensured the entire pacing system began functioning naturally.

The treating team included Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of the Cardiology Department, Dr. S.K. Sharma, Dr. Kunal Ostwal, Dr. Anurag Kujur, and Dr. Ved Prakash. This treatment was performed under the Chief Minister’s Special Health Assistance Scheme, in which medico-social worker Khogendra Sahu played a significant role in providing benefits under the scheme.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, while congratulating the people of the state on this achievement, said that this successful treatment by the Advanced Cardiac Institute is a testament to the high level and continuous progress of Chhattisgarh’s medical services. He said that the state’s largest government hospital is no longer limited to general treatment, but is also successfully performing world-class complex procedures. Congratulating the team of doctors, the Chief Minister said that this achievement not only gives new hope to the lives of patients but also demonstrates that government institutions are setting new standards in medical science.

Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said that this complex treatment performed by the Advanced Cardiac Institute, Raipur, is a testament to the strength of the state’s health infrastructure and the excellent capabilities of the doctors. He said that now patients in Chhattisgarh will no longer have to depend on metropolitan cities for advanced cardiac procedures.

The state government strives to ensure that every citizen has access to free and high-quality medical facilities through schemes such as the Chief Minister’s Special Health Assistance Scheme. The Health Minister congratulated the medical team, stating that this achievement will further establish Chhattisgarh on the national medical map.

It is noteworthy that in 2022-23, ACI ranked fifth nationwide in the treatment of the highest number of electrophysiology cases.
