Paris: Clashes broke out in the French capital and other cities as hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated against rising living costs and inequality on Saturday, October 31. Although the nationwide mobilisation remained largely peaceful, confrontations involving groups of masked demonstrators and police overshadowed the conclusion of some marches.

A police officer in Paris was injured after being struck by a Molotov cocktail. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the officer sustained minor injuries and described the attack as attempted murder. The Paris police prefecture attributed the violence to several hundred people who attacked security personnel with projectiles.

Confrontations Follow Paris March

Violence erupted as the procession on the outskirts of Paris reached its destination. AFP journalists witnessed masked individuals dressed in black breaking up paving stones with hammers and throwing pieces towards police. Officers responded with tear gas and baton charges.

Earlier, the march had unfolded in sunshine, with some participants wearing Halloween costumes, including witches, clowns and fictional characters. A helicopter circled above eastern Paris as demonstrators carried placards expressing frustration over their economic circumstances and future prospects.

Unrest Reported Beyond the Capital

Confrontations also occurred in Lyon, where police fired tear gas after people threw projectiles at officers, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.

In Toulouse, police deployed water cannon against an unauthorised demonstration attended by several thousand people, many of them young. The incidents followed a third successive weekend of nationwide mobilisation, much of which passed peacefully.

Economic Grievances Broaden Into Rights Debate

The protest movement has brought together Yellow Vest activists, trade unions, school pupils and university students. Its initial concerns centred on rising living expenses, inequality and deteriorating conditions in education.

Following restrictions on demonstrations and serious injuries suffered by some protesters, demands expanded to include protection of civil liberties and the right to demonstrate. This has added a dispute over policing and protest restrictions to the movement’s economic grievances.

Security Restrictions and Business Concerns

Authorities had prepared a substantial security operation ahead of Saturday’s demonstrations, deploying approximately 70,000 police and gendarmes. Some businesses boarded up their premises amid concerns about a repeat of earlier unrest.

In Paris, authorities authorised a march on the outskirts rather than the central route sought by organisers. More than 40 metro stations were scheduled to close, with disruption also expected on tram services. The measures reflected official concern about renewed disorder following violence earlier in October.

Nunez blamed far-left extremist groups for attacks on security forces. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen also condemned the Molotov cocktail attack and called for severe punishment for those responsible. Those political reactions followed another day in which widespread peaceful participation was accompanied by serious violence involving a smaller section of those on the streets.
