COVID-19 cases in India: Since January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread across the world due to the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which has claimed millions of lives worldwide. This virus was entering the body through the breath, eyes, nose, and mouth. The first case of corona was reported in India on 30 January 2020. Then a medical student who returned from Wuhan city of China was found infected with corona. Its cases were not being reported for some time, but recently the increasing cases of COVID-19 in South-East Asian countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have raised concerns in India as well.

Today on Tuesday May 20, 2025 Fifty three ( 53 ) cases have been reported in Mumbai. In such a situation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged to maintain peace and continue monitoring, despite the increasing cases in some parts of Asia. Also, citizens were advised to seek medical help if symptoms of Covid appear.

Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong are seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases, prompting health officials to remain vigilant and advise people to take precautions. According to Nation Thailand, there were 31 severe COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong in the week ending May 3. In Singapore, the Ministry of Health and Communicable Diseases Agency said the estimated number of COVID-19 cases for the week of April 27 to May 3 was 14,200, up from 11,100 in the week before that.

In a press release, Edwin Tsui, Controller of Hong Kong’s Health Protection Centre, said, “Since the restoration of normalcy, Hong Kong has seen a cycle of active COVID-19 cases every 6 to 9 months. We expect the level of COVID-19 activity to remain at peak levels for at least the next few weeks.”

What was said in the review meeting

On May 19, 2025 a review meeting chaired by the Director General of Health Services, chaired by experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Emergency Medical Relief Division (EMR), Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Central Government Hospitals concluded that the current COVID-19 situation in India is under control. As of May 19, 2025, the number of active COVID-19 cases in India is 257 which is a very low figure considering the large population of the country. Almost all of these cases are mild, not requiring hospitalisation. However, the Union Health Ministry is constantly monitoring the situation and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to protect public health.
