Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami hoisted the National Flag at his official residence in Dehradun on Saturday August 15, 2026 as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day, calling upon citizens to work collectively towards building a strong, prosperous and self-reliant nation.
Dhami paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices secured India’s Independence and remembered soldiers and security personnel who have defended the country’s sovereignty. He also acknowledged the contribution of activists associated with the Uttarakhand Statehood movement.
The Chief Minister’s Independence Day message combined patriotism with a call for public responsibility, development and good governance, placing Uttarakhand’s progress within India’s larger ambition of becoming a developed nation.

He said the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat required collective participation and that Uttarakhand, with its tradition of military service, spirituality and sacrifice, had an important role in the national endeavour.
Safety Takes on Added Significance After Chamoli Tragedy
This year’s Independence Day observance in Uttarakhand came against a sombre backdrop following the devastating accident at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydroelectric project tunnel in Chamoli.
Twenty-two workers were inside when water and debris suddenly entered the under-construction tunnel on Thursday evening. By Saturday, authorities reported that 12 workers had been rescued alive, seven bodies recovered and three workers remained missing. Rescue teams continued to contend with rising water and difficult conditions inside the tunnel.
Dhami has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The Chief Minister had also travelled to Chamoli, visited injured workers at the District Hospital in Gopeshwar and reviewed the rescue and medical arrangements.
The tragedy has inevitably brought the question of worker safety at major infrastructure projects into sharper focus. Reports have since emerged alleging that some workers had earlier raised concerns about falling debris inside the tunnel, an issue that makes a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the accident particularly important.
For the State government, therefore, the challenge extends beyond completing ambitious infrastructure projects. Development in Uttarakhand’s difficult Himalayan terrain must be accompanied by rigorous safety standards, monitoring and accountability.
Uttarakhand’s Military Tradition Remembered
Dhami used the Independence Day occasion to underline Uttarakhand’s long association with India’s Armed Forces.
For generations, families from the hill State have sent their sons and daughters into the Army and other security forces, making military service an integral part of Uttarakhand’s social identity.

Dhami has repeatedly projected strict enforcement against cheating and examination irregularities as part of a broader effort to protect the future of Uttarakhand’s youth.

From Devbhoomi to Viksit Bharat
The Chief Minister placed Uttarakhand’s development within the national vision of a self-reliant and developed India.
For a Himalayan State, however, development carries complexities different from those faced by much of the country. Roads, tunnels, hydropower projects and other infrastructure are essential for connectivity and economic growth, but Uttarakhand’s fragile geography also requires heightened attention to environmental and human safety.
The recent Chamoli tragedy has reinforced precisely that challenge.
Dhami’s Independence Day message consequently comes at a moment when Uttarakhand must balance infrastructure expansion, employment generation, environmental sensitivity and the safety of those working on major development projects.
