Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Africa visit, Dominica will confer its highest national award on him, the Dominica Award of Honour. Dominica honoured his contribution to Dominica during the Covid-19 pandemic and his dedication to strengthening the partnership between India and Dominica. A release on Thursday November 14 , 2024 announced that the President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Sylvanie Berton, will confer the award at the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit, which will be held in Georgetown, Guyana from November 19 to 21, 2024. PM Modi will visit the African countries from November 16 to 21, 2024 .
Dominica PM Skerrit also praised Prime Minister Modi, “PM Modi has been a true partner of Dominica, it is an honour to confer Dominica’s highest national honour on him as a symbol of our gratitude for his support especially in our time of need amid the global health crisis. We look forward to furthering this partnership and advancing our shared vision.”
India sent 70,000 doses of vaccine
In February 2021, India supplied 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Dominica during the coronavirus pandemic. Dominica said that this also gave them an opportunity to help their neighbouring Caribbean countries. The release also said that the award recognises the role Dominica has played in promoting sustainable development in the education and information technology sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.
PM will participate in India-CARICOM summit
Prime Minister Modi, while accepting the award offer, has emphasized the need for cooperation in solving global challenges like climate change and geopolitical conflicts. He has also reiterated India’s commitment to work together with Dominica and Caribbean countries. Prime Minister Modi will participate in the India-CARICOM summit, which is a platform for cooperation between India and CARICOM member countries, along with Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
