Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren was admitted to the hospital in July due to kidney related problems. Due to his critical condition, he was put on ventilator.
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren passed away on Monday August 4, 2025 after a prolonged illness. He was 81 years old. He breathed his last at Delhi’s Gangaram Hospital.
The hospital declared Shibu Soren dead on Monday August 4, 2025 morning at 8.56 am. He died after a prolonged illness. He was suffering from kidney problems. He also suffered a stroke about a month and a half ago and was on life support for about a month. Dr. AK Bhalla, Chairman of Nephrology Department and the Neurology team were treating him at Gangaram Hospital.
On the death of Shibu Soren, his son Hemant Soren said that respected Dishom Guruji has left us all. Today I have become empty.

Expressing condolences on the demise of Shibu Soren, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Shibu Soren ji, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and one of the seniormost leaders of the country, was counted among those stalwart leaders of Jharkhand, who fought lifelong for the rights and empowerment of the weaker sections of the society, especially the tribal society.
He was always connected to the land and the people. I also had a long acquaintance with him. I am deeply saddened by his demise.

He was known as the founding patron of the party. Former Chief Minister Soren was born on January 11, 1944 in Hazaribagh, Bihar, now Jharkhand. He was also known among the people as Dishom Guru and Guruji. He initially fought against the exploitation of tribals. He raised the voice of tribal society through ‘Dhankatni Andolan’ and other movements in the 70s. He also played a decisive role in the movement to create a separate state of Jharkhand from Bihar. He became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand thrice (2005, 2008, 2009) but could not complete his term even once.
He became the Coal Minister in the first term of UPA but had to resign from the Union Cabinet. Shibu Soren entered politics after the assassination of his father Shobhram Soren.
Shibu contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1977 but faced defeat. But he was successful in 1980. After this, he won the elections in 1986, 1989, 1991, 1996 as well. In 2004, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dumka. Shibu Soren has also been the CM of Jharkhand. Now his son Hemant Soren is the CM of the state.
