Relations between India and Canada deteriorated after the murder of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar last year. The tension had increased to such an extent that both the countries had recalled their diplomats and high commissioners. Now the agreement reached between PM Modi and Mark Carney may lead to a softening of relations.

During the meeting of PM Modi and Mark Carney, India and Canada have agreed to appoint new High Commissioners. Both countries will appoint new High Commissioners to resume normal diplomatic services. This will benefit the citizens and businessmen of both countries.

A statement issued by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said that Carney and Modi reaffirmed the importance of Canada-India relations based on mutual respect, rule of law and commitment to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Congratulated Carney for his spectacular victory in the election
Earlier, during talks with his Canadian counterpart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mark Carney for his spectacular victory in the election. He said that relations between India and Canada are very important in many ways. Many Canadian companies have investments in India. The people of India also have huge investments on Canadian soil. Dedicated to democratic values, Canada and India will have to strengthen democracy together, strengthen humanity. PM Modi said that he is confident that the two leaders together can take India-Canada relations further. He said, ‘Relations between India and Canada are very important, and we should take steps together in many areas that benefit both countries. It is worth noting that this was the first meeting between the two leaders since Carney took office in May 2025.

It is an honor to host PM Modi: Carney
Before the meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that it is an honor to host PM Modi at the G7 summit. He said that India has been participating in G-7 conferences since 2018, which reflects India’s role and leadership. Relations deteriorated last year over the murder of Nijjar

It is worth noting that after the murder of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year, relations between the two countries had soured. The then Canadian PM Justin Trudeau had accused India for the murder of Nijjar. The situation in both the countries worsened further when Canada linked the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats to the investigation into the alleged murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. After this, Canada declared High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and other diplomats as “Person of Interest”. After this, India also reacted and expelled six Canadian diplomats in October last year. And recalled its High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and other targeted officials from Canada. India had strongly rejected Ottawa’s allegations that the High Commissioner was linked to the investigation into the killing of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, further worsening already strained relations between the two countries.
