Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. It involves many traditions and rituals, including fasting, worship, and reenactments: 

Janmasthami is a majour Hindu Festival on Mon, 26 Aug, 2024

This is celebrated across the country with great grandeur and enthusiasm. This will be 5251st birth anniversary of Lord Shri Krishna, the one, who gave gyan to Arjuna. Krishna Janmashtami is observe during Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. In various parts of India, Dahi Handi is also celebrated with great enthusiasm. Dahi Handi is a playful act of stealing butter from an earthen pot, which is placed at great height. Enthusiast people who are known as Govindas, participate in that act and winner get the reward. Birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated during midnight and offer prayers to Laddoo Gopal Ji, the child form of Shri Krishna.

Fasting Devotees observe a strict fast, abstaining from grains and certain foods, until after midnight. 

  • Midnight vigil .The midnight vigil, known as Jagran, symbolizes the devotees’ readiness to welcome the divine child into their lives. 
  • Worshiping the baby Krishna At midnight, devotees bathe the idol of baby Krishna with milk and water, then adorn him with new clothes and jewelry. They place him in a beautifully decorated swing or cradle. Devotees then sing bhajans (devotional songs), recite slokas, and perform aarti to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. They also offer sweets and fruits to the deity. 
  • Other ritualsDevotees may also:
    • Decorate their houses with flowers and light 
    • Chant “Hare Krishna hare Krishna, Krishna- Krishna Hare Hare” 
    • Reenact episodes from mythology about Krishna’s life, known as “Krishna Lilas” 
    • Perform folk dances, or “garbhas” 
    • Visit the temple of Lord Krishna 
    • Offer heartfelt prayers to Lord Krishna by reciting the prayers of great devotees 
    • Chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, a powerful mantra that connects you with the Lord
