Washington, DC: US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly contacted senior Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei in an effort to restart peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran, according to The Wall Street Journal. The initiative comes as President Donald Trump considers renewed military action against Iran following the November 3 US midterm elections.

Vance sent a letter to Rezaei, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and previously commanded the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The communication sought to explore a possible basis for negotiations, the newspaper reported, citing officials and people familiar with the matter.

The letter and subsequent contacts focused on establishing a negotiating framework rather than presenting a detailed peace agreement. The reported exchange does not indicate that either side has accepted terms or agreed to resume formal talks.

Trump offered a different account of the communication’s purpose. Speaking to reporters, he said Vance’s outreach concerned medical supplies for Iran, disputing its characterisation as a presidential initiative to restart peace negotiations.

The diplomatic contact comes against continuing disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, economic restrictions and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The Journal reported that Washington was seeking nuclear concessions, while Tehran wanted economic relief.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran remained in contact with intermediaries over its own seven-day proposal, which envisages reopening the Strait of Hormuz and pursuing negotiations if Iran’s conditions are met.

Araghchi said Iran remained willing to pursue diplomacy while keeping its armed forces prepared to defend the country.
