Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will launch her Bhasha Andolon from Birbhum on Monday with a protest march against the detention of Bengali‑speaking migrant workers outside the state on suspicion of being Bangladeshi infiltrators. She had announced the plan at her party’s Shaheed Diwas rally on July 21, without naming the venue; the Trinamul Congress later chose Birbhum for its deep association with Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, party sources said.

Banerjee will arrive in the district on Sunday night. On Monday, she will chair an administrative meeting and launch several government projects in Bolpur in the afternoon, before leading a Bhasha Andolon rally covering about 3 km in the town, which includes Tagore’s Santiniketan and Visva‑Bharati.

The march will start from Tourist Lodge and conclude at the Jamboni bus stand, where the TMC chief will pay tribute at Tagore’s statue and address the crowd. On Tuesday, she will attend a government event at Illambazar before returning to Kolkata. All eyes, however, will be on TMC district president Anubrata Mondal, who was recently recorded threatening a police officer over the phone; it is unclear whether he will attend his party chief’s rally.
